4th annual women photographers' exhibition to celebrate INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY (8 March) and to raise funds for UN WOMEN.
Showing work by 16 photographers from Victoria, interstate and overseas, this exhibition has a theme of portraits, families and memories . It references the work of early twentieth-century portrait photographers MAY AND MINNA MOORE who, in 1914 moved from photographing theatrical celebrities to taking farewell portraits of young men in khaki.
Susan Silver states, “The title THE WELL-SPRING draws together these themes of war, personal portraits, relationships. It comes from the Laurence Binyon poem of 1914 “For The Fallen” from his collection “The Winnowing Fan”. This poem includes the well-known Ode (“They shall grow not old……”) recited on Anzac and Remembrance Days:
But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the night;
