Melissa Davis: Stereotype assignment

STUDENT: Melissa Davis, 1st year Full Time
ASSIGNMENT: Stereotype assignment
COMMENT: This image is from my series 'Unlady-like' created for a stereotype assignment. This series (like a stereotype) is supposed to generalise and push the limits of gender casts. While making these images the dichotomy of the modern female condition was revealed to me. On a night out, young girls will spend hours getting ready, immaculately grooming themselves in a kind of feminine ritual, only to wind up a proverbial 'hot mess' in the early hours of the morning. If this metamorphosis is not achieved, then the night is not memorable, and it is deemed a failure. A modern young woman now has to play both the lady and the tomboy, and understand the context between the two.
