This year, Photography Studies College (PSC) was once again thrilled to be in  partnership with Ted’s Cameras to host its HOME Photography Competition. Victorian year 10, 11 and 12 senior secondary school students were invited to enter by submitting photographs that depict what 'home' means to them.

PSC Managing Director, Julie Moss, said that the competition was a way to inspire young people to embrace photography as a positive way of expressing themselves.

“Much of last year was spent in our homes, so we thought it would be a fitting theme for the competition,” say Julie. "We hoped that the theme would inspire students to reflect on what they considered to be 'home' to them, and to express that through a visual medium. We were excited to see how each student responded to the brief, and equally as intrigued to see the concept of 'home' being conveyed in such a variety of ways."

This year’s competition attracted over 50 entries, and the winners were announced today.

We'd like to thank the judges who generously provided their time: Daniel Boetker-Smith, PSC Dean of Photography Studies, Teresa Marino - Ted's Cameras Professional & Retail Sales Consultant for Victoria, Western Australia, Northern Territory and Tasmania, and Clare Jellie, PSC Bachelor of Photography Graduate.

PSC Dean of Photography Studies Daniel Boetker-Smith said that the judges went through and discussed each entry and were struck by the quality and diversity of the submissions.

“Teresa Marino (Ted’s Cameras) and Clare Jellie (PSC Graduate) and I were very impressed with the stunning visuals and in-depth stories. This made the shortlisting and selection a very difficult process.

Chege Mbuthi’s image stood out and was selected unanimously as the winner by the judges – the image is powerful and simple, and blends still life and portraiture in a unique and cinematic way. The subtle use of tone and colour is perfectly matched with a wonderful silhouette to create a striking photograph." Daniel said.
